GIF Files

The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) was developed by CompuServe Information Service as a platform-independent graphics format. GIF (pronounced "jiff") viewers are available for UNIX, IBM PC-compatibles, and Apple Macintosh computers.

In K-12 education, the two most widely used computing platforms are IBM PC-compatibles and Apple Macintosh computers. For these two platforms, the following GIF viewers are recommended:

VPIC (MS DOS) Click here to FTP VPIC
LView (MS Windows-capable PCs) Click here to FTP LView. (You will need "PKUnzip" to decompress LView.)
JPEGViewer (Apple Macintosh) Click here to FTP JPEGViewer321.sit.hqx (approx. 500Kb). (You will need to FTP "StuffIt Expander" to debinhex/unstuff JPEGViewer. It is available at the same site as JPEGViewer.)
