An acronym is a word formed from the initial letter or letters of other words.
NOAA (note the play on words similarity to the biblical figure "Noah"), the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, is a rich source of acronyms. Some pundits quip that the acronym NOAA actually stands for "National Organization for the Advancement of Acronyms!"
A palindrome is a word, verse, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward.
Teacher's Note: As a cross-curricular activity, you may want to challenge students to list as many acronyms and palindromes as they can think of (other than RADAR).
