SGH-B The Sun
Click here for real-time solar imagery... We see the Sun in the sky every day (as long as clouds don't block our view), but there's more than meets the eye to the little yellow ball in the sky! The Sun is a star--a very large, dynamic ball of hot gas (mostly hydrogen gas). The energy source of our Sun is the nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium.

The Sun is the only star in our Solar System. It is by far the largest object in the Solar System (over a million Earths would fit inside the Sun!). It appears so small in the sky because it is so far away--on average, 93,000,000 miles (150,000,000 km).
