The Pleiades is perhaps the most famous star cluster in the sky. It can be
seen without binoculars from even light-polluted cities. Also known as the
Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and closest
open clusters. The Pleiades contains over 3,000 stars; with the unaided
eye, we see only the six-or-so brightest stars. It is about 400
light-years away, and 13 light-years across.
