The Medicine Hat Equatorial Sundial
Alberta Province, Canada
50.1°N latitude, 110.7°W longitude

The Medicine Hat equatorial sundial was commissioned by the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat to commemorate its 50th anniversary (1918-1968). The sundial was designed and produced by the Sundial Division of Erickson Memorial Company, Denver, Colorado, and installed at the Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery on Tuesday, 03 June 1969. The sundial was moved to its current location in front of the Medicine Hat City Hall building sometime during the 1980s (there is no record of the exact date the sundial was moved).

The sundial features two rectangular granite plates located in-ground north and south of the dial (see below, photos 24-26, and 30). Each plate shows one-half of a year-long graph of the Equation of Time (EoT) that is used to correct Solar Time (sundial time) for Standard Time (wristwatch time); the following inscription appears on both graphs:

[Begin transcript.]
Upper-Left Side
On this equatorial sundial read the right edge of shadow in a.m.; the left edge of shadow in p.m. Then add or subtract number of minutes shown on chart below for current date. The result will be Standard Time in Medicine Hat. For Daylight Savings [sic] Time subtract [sic] one hour.

Upper-Right Side
Watches in Medicine Hat are set at average Solar Time of the Sun's passage over the 105° meridian (7 hours west of Greenwich, England) 240 miles east of here. The 22.8 minute time difference between here, 110°42'5" east [sic] longitude and 105° east [sic] longitude is corrected for in the dial. Further daily correction to watch time is shown in this analemma [sic]. The granite dial parallels the Equator and the steel gnomon parallels the north-south polar axis.
[End transcript.]

[Editorial Commentary: For Daylight Saving Time (MDT), add one hour to Solar Time. Note that both Medicine Hat (110°42'5"W) and the Standard Time Meridian for the Mountain Time Zone (105°W) are in fact located in the Western Hemisphere. The so-called "analemma" is more correctly referred to as a graph of the Equation of Time.]

Note: The Equation of Time graphs also show the Zodiac (upper x-axis), the band of constellations through which the Sun, Moon, and planets move in the course of a year. Remember that signs of the Zodiac are "Sun signs," meaning that they appear in the day sky on your birthdate (the Sun is "in" your sign).
