"Wildcats" Spotted Scopin' Sunspots!

On Monday, 12 November 2001, Grade Level 4 students from Woodlawn ES (the Wildcats) visited the Sandburg Planetarium for a program entitled, The Sun and Its Neighbors. Afterwards, classes went outside for a quick session of safe solar observation1 using special purpose solar telescopes.2 See what students saw as they looked through the SCSA solar telescopes--on 12 November, the daily sunspot number was 222 and the larger sunspot groups were more than 10 times larger than the Earth's diameter! Students discovered firsthand the lesson learned by all field trip participants: there's more than meets the eye to the little yellow ball in the sky!

Sincere thanks to John Avellone, Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) for his ongoing support for a variety of SCSA observational astronomy initiatives. And of course, thanks to the following Woodlawn ES teachers for allowing their classes to participate in this special event: Ms. Harbour, Ms. Payne, and Ms. Rosenstock.

1   Disclaimer: NEVER look directly at the Sun, especially when using an optical device such as a camera, binoculars, or telescope--blindness may result! Two special purpose solar telescopes were used during this event: the "Solar ProjectorScope" (see Row 4 below) projects a 5-inch diameter image of the Sun inside a "dark box" enabling completely safe sunspot viewing; the Dobsonian solar telescope (see Rows 1-3 below) was designed and constructed so that virtually all of the incident sunlight is filtered before entering the telescope (only about 1/1000 of 1% of the incoming solar radiation actually enters the telescope!). Safely view near-real-time solar imagery (including sunspot imagery) by visiting the SOHO Images Web site (SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory).
2   Of special note, the Solar ProjectorScope was built by John Avellone (repurposing a "department store" telescope belonging to the SCSA), and the Dobsonian solar telescope was built by John Dobson himself (later reconditioned by John Avellone) and generously donated to the SCSA by Neil Feldman, Maryland Sidewalk Astronomers--many thanks John, John & Neil!
