• WCB's Oceanography Web Site. Wm. C. Brown Publishers has developed "the ultimate on-line oceanography resource offering unique and exciting exploration for both students and instructors."
• JASON Project Voyage VII: Adapting to a Changing Sea will take place 15-26 April 1996 in Key Largo, FL. The two-week expedition will visit the Florida Everglades, Florida Bay, the Florida Keys, and the coral reefs in the Straight of Florida.

Oceanographic Visualization Tools

• World Ocean Hydrography. Hydrographic maps from the NOAA World Ocean Atlas CD-ROM (1994). The dataset contains climatological annual-mean water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient fields.
• World Ocean Air-Sea Interaction. Plot flux maps using the dataset prepared by Oregon State University. The dataset contains monthly-mean air-sea heat fluxes and wind stresses.
• Ocean models and visualizers depicting oceanographic variables like sea surface temperature and wave heights for global and hemispheric domains alike.
  • Optimum Thermal Interpolation System (OTIS). Produces "nowcasts" of ocean temperatures generated by an optimum interpolation based objective analysis scheme. The images originate from sea surface temperatures collected by ships, fixed and drifting buoys, and satellite derived data. Images produced every 12 hours.
  • Wave Model (WAM). Image for analysis of current global, Atlantic, and Pacific wave heights, plus 24- and 48-hour forecasts generated by the Wave Model currently implemented at FNMOC.

This volume is an excellent collection of oceanographic photographs taken by U.S. astronauts from space.

• Tsunamis are large ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes or landslides. They are often called "tidal waves" even though they have nothing to do with the tides. The University of Washington tsunami home page is a very good introduction to these killer waves. It has links to basic scientific information and to historical data. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also has a tsunami home page with links to useful information. The latest tsunami watches, warnings and advisories are available from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. The site also has pictures of several tsunamis in progress.

Ocean Currents, including the Gulf Stream

• Jenifer Clark's Top 10 List of Satellite Oceanography Web Sites. Well, actually Top 13. Jenifer Clark, Satellite Oceanographer, a.k.a. "The Gulf Stream Lady," lists her favorite satellite oceanography Web sites and suggested classroom applications.
• Find the Gulf Stream. This activity provides a spreadsheet that contains the observed latitude and longitude of 50 drifter buoys; the spreadsheet is updated once a month. By plotting the change in buoy location, students should be able to infer the location of the Gulf Stream.
